Private Pension

A Private Pension is a tax-efficient way to save. Your employer contributes up to an additional 2% of your salary – effectively an extra salary payment invested directly into your pension. Your own contributions are paid before tax, and you decide how your pension is invested.

Specified personal savings

Up to 3.5% of your pension contribution can be allocated to Specified personal savings. They are held in your name, are inheritable, and offer a choice of investment options. In return, you build up fewer pension rights in the collective pension scheme.

You decide how your Private Pension is invested

You choose the investment option that best suits your needs. You decide how much of your Private Pension is invested in equities and bonds, depending on the level of return potential you are seeking. If you prefer a more conservative approach, you can choose an option with a lower allocation to equities or invest entirely in Eign – Indexed. You can also choose Eign – Foreign, where the entire portfolio is invested in foreign-currency assets.

We encourage you to explore Gildi’s range of investment options and contact us for personal guidance if you have any questions.

You can use what you have saved tax-free to make a payment towards your first home, or if you haven't owned a home in the last 5 years. Once you have bought a home, you can then use payments into your private pension savings (séreignarsparnaður) to pay down your mortgage tax-free. This way you own your home sooner and your payment burden decreases over time.
